| This collection consists of cultural artifacts
which transcend their intended use and exhibit the aesthetic
criteria of art. Their origins vary considerably and may represent,
among other things, treasures brought by pilgrims to Mecca,
examples of personal adornment from the islands of Indonesia
and the steppes of Central Asia, the tools of commerce and agriculture
in SE Asia, and weaponry from inner Burma. Many of these items
are represented in museum collections in the various regions
from which they come, and are no longer being made, or are of
a level of craftsmanship no longer found. |
