| Coming from a nation of over
13,000 islands, the textiles of Indonesia are as varied as their
sources, with each group employing unique motifs and imparting
their own special meanings. As impor-tant cultural artifacts,
these textiles tell us much about the beliefs and social systems
of the people who make and use them. This collection comes from
the islands of Bali, Borneo, Flores, Java, Savu, Sumatra, Sumba,
and Timor. The techniques of batik, ikat, supplementary warp
and weft weaving (including songket), and embroidery are employed;
materials are primarily cotton, although some are silk. |
